How to convert SRT to VTT

    1. Drop the .srt file on the box above, or paste its text.
    2. Under Save as, WebVTT is already chosen. For VTT to SRT, load a .vtt file and choose SRT.
    3. Check the preview and Download. Nothing is uploaded: the conversion happens in your browser.

What changes between SRT and WebVTT

Going to WebVTT, the converter writes the WEBVTT header, switches the comma to a full stop and drops <font> tags, which WebVTT doesn't support. Going to SRT, it numbers the captions from 1, switches back to commas and removes WebVTT-only tags such as voices and classes, keeping bold, italics and underline. Cue settings and STYLE blocks only exist in WebVTT, so they are left out of an SRT file.

    Which format to use

WebVTT is the format web browsers play with the HTML video element, and video platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo accept it. SRT is the most widely supported format in desktop players, TVs and editing software. If one doesn't load, try the other: the captions inside are the same.

SRT files are written with Windows line endings, which the oldest players and TVs expect; everything else reads them too.

    Other fixes

If the converted captions are early or late, shift them. If they drift, use the subtitle frame rate converter. Captions from a speech-to-text tool can be tidied with the AI subtitle cleaner before you convert.

    Questions

How do I convert an SRT file to VTT?

Load the .srt file, keep WebVTT selected under Save as, and download. The converter adds the WEBVTT header and changes the time format.

Can I convert VTT back to SRT?

Yes. Load the .vtt file and choose SRT. Captions are numbered from 1 and WebVTT-only settings are left out.

    Is styling kept?

Bold, italics and underline are kept both ways. Font tags only exist in SRT and voices, classes and cue settings only in WebVTT, so those are removed when the other format can't hold them.

    Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and the file stays on your device.
